I need an idea. For a tool. Cross-dev. Something I can write in C. Command line - no unnecessary GUI. Quickly!

To. Do. What. ?

Sorry it's been a busy day and I couldn't resist :-)

Are you after a C cross compiler itself ? In which case there is CC65 (http://www.cc65.org)
Or an idea for a tool to write in C and cross compile ? In which case how about ooh .. lets see .. always hard thing of something .. erm .. ahh! "A co-operative task scheduler with memory management that allows a single process almost full control of the system but also gives each process the capability to swap itself to a REU and swap in another task" ?

:-)

Maybe my reply is only partly helpful.

Uh. So a simple little project like that. :) I was really asking for an idea for a utility that runs on another computer, but I have actually been thinking of my own operating system for a long time. I even wrote some code over ten years ago, to handle tasks and memory allocation, but then I went back to school. RAM Expansion wasn't a part of the plan and swapping is hard to implement on a system without an MMU, but an idea of "freezing" a task into the expanded memory is kinda fascinating - thanks for giving me this to ponder!

An operating system sure sounds like a "simple project" :D How about that modular ROM instead ?

I started writing some new code after television in Finland ended. I will be able to bring you a new version of my ROM soon with bugs fixed and a new feature added. First I had to do some serious reverse-engineering, coz I had pretty much forgotten what I had done with it a year ago. I didn't even find the source for the runtime menu.

It then turned up and that's what I've been reworking. Suddenly the reason why the file loading didn't work caught my eye. I was calling $FFDB with the filename. It's other people's fault because they forced me to write my assembly in lowercase. If I had written that in uppercase, such a mistype would have never passed my eyes...

Anyway, I already replaced the problematic dirlister with a new one that is integrated in the source. Now it should finally work! I will do the same later for my MMC64 boot menu. The dirlister from PlushDos never worked for me. In that context the reason is probably that BASIC isn't initialized, but I dunno why it doesn't work in the ROM either.

I should also resume work on my RR Flasher. I haven't thought of that as very important because there is already a functional product for that purpose as well as TNT's flasher for MMC64 users. It just occurred to me that there might be several RR users who don't have MMC64 and are stuck with Cyberpunx's flasher, which did not impress me a lot.

If I get DreamLoad to work, I will probably add a flash-from-file feature to enable flashing of files larger than 40K. This should be doable with its Open/Get interface and thus enable fast flashing of 64K ROMs too from disk. It's just that during all of this time I haven't received a single PM or email from anyone who would be using any of my utils...

So I'm not sure if they have any users and I'm not very motivated to keep working on them for that reason. I hope Mr. Achten will provide me with the little thing I asked him to include in the BIOS, so I can add a new feature to my boot menu. I also hope TNT will do a new version of his browser to support plugins. There is a lot to do for us!
