 Post subject: MMC64 and Silversurfer?

Is it possible to use a silversurfer with the MMC64? The manual of the MMC only talks about using the RR-Net on the port of the MMC64, but there shouldn't be any problem running a silversurfer on it instead, or...?

No problem as far as I know. Unless its registers colide with MMC64.. but that would be quite a design blooper.

I now have tried that, it works just fine. You need to desolder the pin header and use the pins at the opposite edge tho. You also need to cut small part of C64 cover to make it fit.

Edit: While my 512 MB Kingston SD (manufactured by Toshiba) works just fine, my 128 MB CnMemory MMC (manufacturer ID = 4, unknown) has lots of read errors when Silversurfer is connected. Need to investigate more...

Problematic card works fine with Silversurfer on my C128D, so I suspect the weak buffering on C64 is the culprit. I wonder how much timing trouble I get if I add buffering to address- and data buses.

I suspect that the MMC64 uses DOTCLOCK like the RR. This makes timing a bit tighter, but with a standard HC style bus-transceiver I believe you have a typical propergation delay of around 10 ns. That should be fast enough even for a DOTCLOCK triggered chipselect unless the timing is already close to the border values.
But how exactly would you go about inserting transceivers mechanically? ..and where would you put them?

First I plan trying with 8 Bit Baby board & cartidge connector which I have lying around, then later using PCB placed between motherboard and cartridge connector if the prototype works. That requires "some" desoldering but should be doable, at least if I limit buffering to address- and data buses. In a pinch everything could be glued dead bug style over the cartrige connector cover.

It might be cleaner looking if I desoldered the connector completely, then glued it back upside down, then solder add-on board to its pins. Fixing any design goofs would be pretty hard with that version, especially if using one-sided PCB which means all new logic would be between the motherboard and the add-on board.

Ahh, yes. With 8-bit Baby it should be easy to test if it would work at all.
